Sports in and around Tarifa

Tarifa is Europe´s principal spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The few days with little wind don´t necessarily mean lazy days. There is always an opportunity for paddlesurf or for trying out a kayak. Land sports are not far behind: Tarifa is a fantastic place for mountain biking, climbing, hiking in the natural parks, and it is within easy reach from several golf courses.

Water sports

The brand new Liam Whaley Pro Center, only 2km from the Hurricane, boasts a dedicated team of qualified instructors, prepared to give courses of Kitesurfing, Wing-Foiling, Windsurfing or Stand Up Paddling in Spanish, English, Italian, French and German. They also rent kite equipment with the best quality Duotone, Fanatic & Ion.

Walking along endless beaches or through dense cork oak forests whilst admiring breathtaking views from the top of a mountain is a wonderful way to escape from everyday life, and there is no better place than the wild surroundings of Tarifa. There are marked trails, with one of them, the well-known “Buda” route, in fact starting right behind the Punta Sur hotel. For those who do not need a marked route, GPS applications such as Wikiloc or Komoot offer dozens of wonderful trails.

Mountain Bike

Biking is no longer just a wonderful alternative for windless days. Now mountain biking in Tarifa is becoming more and more a reason in itself to visit Tarifa. There are climbs and downhill slopes for all levels. The tallest mountain in the area, “Tajo de las Escobas”, rises up to 839 meters, and dozens of challenging routes offer fun and adrenaline for bikers of all tastes. Mountain biking is a fantastic way to keep fit and enjoy the outdoors and the breathtaking views of Tarifa. We recommend to rent Cannondale mountain bikes at the Hurricane gym or reserve a guided tour with Scott E-Bikes.

Rock Climbing

The rocks of San Bartolo mountain, just a few kilometers from the hotel, boast some classic routes and sport routes for all levels. They are protected from the wind and offer the possibility of climbing all year round thanks to the mild climate of the region. The rock consists of compact sand and limestone and most of the climbing routes are about 25 meters long, although there are also routes of up to 80 meters.

For golf lovers, Hurricane is less than an hour’s drive from some of the best golf courses in Europe; Valderrama, Sotogrande y Montenmedio.
